You know what they say- “April showers bring May flowers!” For said flowers to grow, however, they must first be planted!

If you’re at all doubtful of your green thumb, don’t worry! As one of Niagara’s top landscaping companies, we’ve rounded up some of the easiest flowers to grow.

Each of these carefully selected flowers is fairly low maintenance, making them perfect for first-time gardeners. Without further ado, here are our favourite flowers for beginners:

Sunflowers

These bright blooming annuals come in more than 70 different varieties. And although they’re known for being bright shades of yellow, sunflowers can also be found in shades of pink, cream and chocolate brown.

Sunflowers thrive in full sun, with most varieties blooming for several weeks during the middle of summer. They’re one of the taller flowers on this list, with some varieties measuring 14 feet in height.

Why we love them: The centers of sunflowers are composed of tiny, nectar-producing flower clusters, which attract butterflies, bees, and birds.

Zinnias

You can find these beautiful annual flowers in every colour but blue! They can also be multicoloured. Zinnias’ bloom during the summer and do best in full sun and well-drained rich soil.

Why we love them: Zinnias come in many different shapes and sizes. Some grow up to 40 inches, while others only reach 4. Some look like pom-poms while others are somewhat spider-like.

Marigolds

Marigolds are one of the hardiest flowers you can plant in your garden. The cheerful annuals grow in shades of yellow, red and gold.

They thrive in full sun and prefer well-drained soil. Marigolds bloom brightly all summer long and grow anywhere from 6 inches to 3 feet tall.

Why we love them: We love Marigolds because of their ability to brighten up any space while keeping mosquitoes at bay.

Cosmos

These annuals can be found in orange, pink and white. They love full sun but do appreciate some afternoon shade if planted in hotter climates.

Cosmos bloom throughout the summer months and can grow anywhere from 18 to 60 inches tall. These daisy lookalikes also help repel mosquitoes!

Why we love them: Cosmos can grow in both beds and containers. They also make great cut flowers!

Wax Begonias

Wax begonias can be found in orange, yellow, pink and white. Some varieties produce single blooms while others offer doubles. These plants can also have ruffled or smooth petals.

These annuals bloom during the summer and fall months in partial sun or shade and can grow anywhere between 6 to 12 inches tall in fertile soil.

Why we love them: Begonias have more than 1,000 different species, all of which differ in size, shape, and colour.

Pansies

Don’t let the name of this flower fool you. Pansies are anything but wimpy. These plants are one of the toughest flowers you can grow.

This resilient plant does best with sun and rich soil that drains easily. Most pansies are annuals, but some live a bit longer.

To grow to their full potential, pansies need regular watering. But even in perfect conditions these flowers won’t grow very big, only growing between 6 to 9 inches.

Why we love them: Aside from their whiskered faces, we love pansies because of their ability to add colour to your garden during the cool weather in the spring and fall.

Impatiens

Is your garden in the shade? If so, you’ll want to plant these reliable flowers.

Grown as annuals, impatiens are great low-maintenance plants. They grow quickly and once planted they require very little care.

These tiny plants also won’t grow more than a foot and bloom non-stop from spring to first frost.

Why we love them: These vibrant flowers attract a variety of birds, including the smallest one in the world, the hummingbird.

Coneflowers

Coneflowers bloom in the early summer until or through the first frost. They can be planted in full sun, but they do enjoy afternoon shade as it keeps them from fading.

These perennials can be found in bright pink, purple or crimson and adding them to your garden can attract butterflies, bees and birds.

Why we love them: Coneflowers are great for adding depth to your garden since they can grow up to 5 feet tall.

Daylilies

Daylilies enjoy full sun and can adapt to a wide range of soils while still growing robustly. When choosing daylilies for your garden, you can select varieties that bloom in the early, middle, or late summer. Regardless of when they bloom, they can grow up to 4 feet tall.

Why we love them: Daylilies offer buds you can eat. But make sure to leave a few buds on the plant so they can grow into flowers.

Petunia

The final plant on this list is the popular petunia. These annuals can manage full and partial sun and require little maintenance. They bloom in the spring, summer and fall and range anywhere from 6 inches to 4 feet in height.

Why we love them: They come in a wide range of colours including, white, red, pink, purple, and yellow. They can also be striped or multicoloured!
