It also means it’s time for this year’s fall yard cleanup!
Arguably one of the most important parts of a fall clean-up, raking the mound of fallen leaves that camouflage your lawn is an absolute must.
Leaving them over the winter is not only unattractive, but it can also smother your grass, leave your lawn susceptible to bacteria and hinder its overall growth.
You can even save some of the raked leaves and repurpose them as mulch for your garden! The decomposing leaves offer an abundance of nutrients and help your perennials and bulbs stay insulated over the winter months.
This next one may not be your favourite, but it’s an important one.
Whether you rely on your trusted leaf blower or climb up a ladder and remove the leaves and debris yourself, you’ll want to make sure your gutters are clear well before winter arrives.
If you choose to neglect your eavestrough, rainwater will accumulate and may cause significant water damage to your home.
Thank your vegetable garden for a great season and ensure it’s ready for next year with a proper clean-up!
Begin with a final round of weeding. Once your garden is free of weeds, observe the remaining vegetable plants and decide if you’re going to leave any of them over the winter as a source of food or habitat for local animals.
Now is also a great time to add a layer of compost to the soil to ensure it’s healthy for next spring.
Grass maintenance is a key part of fall yard work. It’s the perfect time to revive bare patches or seed new lawn areas.
Don’t forget to cut your lawn at least 3” high during the fall months. This helps your lawn develop strong roots for the upcoming year. For your final cut before winter, you can go a tad shorter to allow a bit of growth while your lawnmower takes a well-deserved vacation in the shed.
Fall is the perfect time to plant spring-blooming bulbs like hyacinths, tulips, and daffodils. The soil is still warm, fall showers are abundant and pests and diseases pose less of a risk. Plus, after a long winter, you’re going to be longing for some lively hues...
Begin preparing your garden now so that when spring does arrive you can sit back and enjoy its vibrant palette.
