One of the annual questions we hear from clients at Tree Amigos is: “I’m renovating my patio and driveway, but can’t decide on a material to use. What’s better: Interlocking pavers, concrete or asphalt for the driveway?”
If the issue were based solely on aesthetics, interlocking pavers would win, hands down. Their clean lines, subtle colour variations and professionally landscaped appearance add curb appeal and beauty to any home’s entrance, driveway, patio or entertainment area.
Tree Amigos’ stone experts have been successfully installing interlocking pavers since we incorporated in 2004, so we know a thing or two about pavers! We are a Unilock-authorized contractor, which means we have access to the best products and installation techniques developed to date for adding beauty to your home with interlocking pavers.
Interlocking pavers became a popular driveway and patio installation choice, readily available to local landscapers in Niagara in the late 1970s.
The first versions of this paver were always red. Now, however, interlocking pavers are available in many different colours - but you can still choose red, if you wish!
Interlocking pavers can successfully be used to line front entranceways; create unique driveway patterns; accent or make up the entire rear yard seating area and provide a sound base for installation features, like outdoor kitchens or entertainment areas.
Will an interlocking paver patio or driveway outlast a concrete or asphalt installation? Yes - if the sub-grade is stable; the installation is professionally completed and the patio or driveway is properly maintained.
Since the interlocking pavers “float” on top of their solid sub-surface, they are less likely to show damage from heaving caused by freezing and thawing.
Concrete and asphalt, however, since they are a more solid surface, allow no give, and therefore will crack when extreme temperatures cause the ground to shift.
Every year, a homeowner may run into maintenance costs for concrete and asphalt, repairing cracks and re-sealing the surface.
While an interlocking paver driveway or patio installation may cost more than concrete or asphalt, Tree Amigos staff note their upkeep is simpler than any other hard-surface application.
Our tips include spring maintenance, like a thorough wash-down; dealing with oil spots or dirt as required; minor weed control; edging back lawn to keep grass from encroaching, and sealing only if you want.
